Dowitchers have become some of our favorite birds and are easily detected by their rapid “oil drilling” probing of mud. They are extremely hard to distinguish visually, but knowing the habitat helps. While Short-billed Dowitchers prefer saltier estuaries, Long-billeds like this one prefer inland freshwater habitats.
